One of the major worries of parents is education, or choosing the best educational decision for their children based on the available possibilities at every stage of their academic careers.

It is evident that Malaysian parents place a high value on their children’s education in order to provide a secure future for them.

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) is the major national examination that awards secondary school diplomas to individuals who pass it. After 11 years of study, the test is taken in Form 5. For Malaysian students, SPM is one of the routes to postsecondary education.

Many parents are looking for alternate routes to postsecondary education and are considering the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

This article will provide you a complete understanding of IGCSE.

What is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)?

International General Certificate of Secondary Education is abbreviated as IGCSE.

It is the equivalent of the British O-Level, UK GCSE, fifth form, or year 11 and is regarded the most popular worldwide accreditation for the conclusion of secondary school.

The test is taken before a student moves on to Advanced Level (A-Level) or pre-university education in their individual nations and schools.

The curriculum lasts five years, beginning with Year 7 (the equivalent of Form 1) and finishing with the Examination Board’s set and graded Year 11 exams.

To achieve their entrance criteria, many institutions throughout the world demand a combination of Cambridge International A Levels and Cambridge IGCSEs. Furthermore, colleges and institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada accept students who have completed the IGCSE Certificate. Additionally, this programme provides an avenue for Malaysian students to study overseas.

Students with an IGCSE certificate will considerably profit from the programme after they finish their study and move on to the next phase, which is joining the labour market, because many of the world’s best firms embrace and recognise this programme.

IGCSE is well-liked by homeschoolers and adult students alike. Though most IGCSE students are between the ages of 14 and 17, depending on primary 1 enrollment age, it also permits students from alternative education and adult students to sit for the test and continue their own education progress at any age.

Subjects for the IGCSE

IGCSE has over 70 disciplines to choose from, with students obliged to study a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 14 subjects.

English, mathematics, and science are the key disciplines. Students can, however, pick from a variety of topics ranging from Social Sciences (Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, and Sociology) to Arts & Technology (Computer Studies, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), and Art & Design).

For each course, students receive one IGCSE certificate. You will receive five IGCSE certificates if you take five topics. The amount of topics required varies from school to school and is also dependent on personal taste.

In Malaysia, it is required for all Malaysian students in Year 11 to enrol in their SPM Bahasa Malaysia (the Form 5 Year).

Exams for the IGCSE

Unlike the Malaysian Certificate of Education (or Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, or SPM), which has just one examination per year, the Cambridge IGCSE has two tests per year, in June and November. Every year in August and January, the IGCSE publishes its results.

Furthermore, compared to SPM graduates, IGCSE graduates can qualify for scholarships and be admitted to college and/or university sooner.

The Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) grading system

The IGCSE is graded on a scale of A* to G, with U for “Ungraded.” To graduate to the next advanced level or higher study, students must get a minimum grade of C in the five core disciplines.

The IGCSE grading system strives to keep grading consistent from year to year, so that students with the same level of accomplishment earn the same grade. This means that marks should represent the same level of accomplishment across various syllabuses and years within the same qualification.

The following is an overview of IGCSE grading:

Whatever path parents choose for their children in terms of alternative secondary school qualifications, it is critical to consult various online resources, speak with teachers, parents, and students who have some experience, visit and take trial classes (if possible) at schools and learning centres, and ensure that it is the best option for the child and his future.

Choosing IGCSE is something to think about since it is a nice and viable option if you can afford it!
